Coloured contact lenses can lead to blindness
Coloured contact lenses are are widely used in film, fashion and music.

Robert Pattinson wears them in Twilight, Lady Gaga is a fan and many models and actresses use them to temporarily change the colour of their eyes.

So it's no surprise that they have become increasingly popular for fancy dress or as a way to chance our appearance for a big night out.

But unless they're bought from a registered optometrist, optician or medical practitioner and are properly fitted and regularly cleaned they can lead to infection - and even blindness.

Trading standards watchdogs have warned that many young Britons are risking their sight by wearing illegally sold cosmetic contact lenses - and are even sharing them with friends.

Using lenses that are unsuitable for the eye or using them incorrectly can cause serious problems like corneal ulcers and infections, and in serious cases this can result in the lost of an eye.

Trading standards officers are aware that novelty contact lenses are being sold illegally at hairdressers, beauticians, novelty shops and market stalls - and they are now warning proprietors that they risk further action if they don't stop selling them.

Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for rural issues and cultural services, at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, told the Daily Mail: "I would strongly urge that people only buy lenses from a legal source, have them fitted by a professional and follow all advice about how to wear and look after the lenses.

"Failure to do so may cause serious eye problems."
