'We are heartbroken': Champion American free-skier, 16, dies in accident on his first week training in Australia

A teenage American ski champ died last week after sustaining devastating injuries while training at an Australian ski resort.
Sam Jackenthal, 16, was between training sessions at the Perisher Ski Resort in New South Wales when he crashed while freeskiing in early September.
The Park City, Utah teen spent the next few weeks in a coma until he died on Thursday.

His father, Ron Jackenthal, made the sad announcement in an emotional Facebook post on the Team Park City United (TPCU) page.
'We are heartbroken to share that Sam passed away late last night in Australia with his immediate family at his side.
'We believe that while his physical body is no longer with us, his light and spirit will continue to shine bright and bring happiness to us all, just as he always has.'

TPCU executive director Ryan Walsh told KSL before Jackenthal's death that he was injured in the first week of a two-week training camp.
'We've got a great kid, and we're hoping for the best possible outcome for him,' he said at the time.
'There are a lot of people in this town and in this community - and I have heard from folks from other programs around the country - who are all sending a lot of great energy (his way).'

Walsh said that Jackenthal's family rushed to his bedside following the tragedy. He was surrounded by loved ones and his coach Chris 'Hatch' Haslock when he died.
'Sam brought light and love to everyone who knew him - he made their lives better than before they met,' Haslock wrote. 'I am comforted knowing that Sam's life was full of everything he loved. He lived to the fullest with passion and enthusiasm - an unabashed love for life.'
Sam was a student at The Winter Sports School in Park City. On Sunday it announced it would be opening for a half-day only on Monday, with normal classes suspended, so that pupils, staff and parents could come together and mourn Sam's passing. Grief counselors will be on hand.
Last year, Jackenthal won the combined title (slopestyle, halfpipe, big air) while skiing for Team Park City United at the USSA Junior Nationals.
USSA President and CEO Tiger Shaw said: 'As our community and his family have kept vigil these past few weeks, we've all learned so much about Sam as a remarkable person who brought joy to those around him and an athlete who was achieving his dream.
'Our hearts go out to the Jackenthals, as well as their extended family with Team Park City United.'
