     Surprised to hear that the Kardashian sisters are in Armenia, amid much fanfare? If so, you must not be familiar with the reality star family. Kim, especially, frequently talks about how she’s from Armenian descent (on father Robert Kardashian’s side) and has always wanted to visit the country.
    

So this week, Kim and Khloe arrived on the long-anticipated trip, along with Kim’s husband Kanye West and baby daughter North West. The trip is two weeks before the country pays tribute to the Armenian massacre exactly 100 years ago, when 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Turks.

After their Wednesday night arrival, the sisters met with Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan. According to E! — which airs the family’s reality show — the prime minister said that “their visit to their historical homeland helped bring international recognition to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and remembering the lives lost.”

Khloe also posted a photo to Instagram of their trip to the Mother Armenia statue in Yerevan, the capital. “The Mother Armenia statue symbolizes peace through strength,” Khloe wrote. “It can remind viewers of some of the prominent female figures in Armenian history. Who took up arms to help their husbands in their clashes with Turkish troops and Kurdish irregulars.”

In the past, the sisters have frequently talked about their Armenian roots. For example:

* Kim had a DNA test on George Lopez’s late-night talk show, where she found out she was 94 percent Armenian and six percent Native American.

* Khloe fretted about her family’s reaction when ex-husband Lamar Odom got an offer to play basketball in Turkey.
