WADA added meldonium, which was created in Latvia, to the prohibited list on Jan. 1 after claiming there was evidence that it was being used for performance enhancement.

WADA had prolonged the period in which athletes testing positive for meldonium can avoid sanctions until Sept. 30. WADA extended a policy that had previously covered the period between Jan. 1 and March 1. Although this has not been officially announced yet, meldonium will be completely prohibited starting Oct. 1.
