US fighter plane missing after 'crashing into the sea off Okinawa coast'

A US fighter jet has reportedly crashed into the sea off the coast of Japan.
     The military aircraft, believed to be a AV8B Harrier II jet, reportedly crashed after taking off from a major Air Force base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.
     Japanese daily Ryukyu Shimpo reports the aircraft's crew have been rescued.

The 11th Regional Coast Guard are searching for the plane, with a helicopter and patrol boat, at the crash site, 150 kilometers east of Kunigami district.
     The US Air Force is stationed at Kadena Air Base on the island of Okinawa.
     Nearly 18,000 Americans and more than 4,000 Japanese employees and contractors are based at Kadena.
