EU's Mogherini Warns Iran Deal Opponents to Stand down

EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini cautioned Israel and other opponents of the nuclear deal with Iran to drop futile opposition, vowing that all the six world powers would do whatever it takes to implement the landmark agreement.

"I tell those few countries that voice concern over this agreement that when we have made such a huge volume of political investment in attaining this agreement, we will logically spend the same level of will and investment in its implementation," Mogherini vowed at a meeting with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Tuesday.

The EU top diplomat stressed that the union is fully ready and resolved to open a new chapter in relations with Iran, and said, "I, on behalf of the European Union, say that we stand fully united and committed in supporting this agreement and I, as a member of the joint commission, will make my utmost effort to monitor the correct, precise and prompt implementation of every step of this agreement."

Under the nuclear agreement struck by Iran and the six world powers in Vienna on July 14, a joint commission - comprising the five permanent UN Security Council members, Germany, the EU and Iran - is tasked with dispute settlement and monitoring proper implementation of every step of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Earlier in tonight's meeting, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said once the Vienna agreement is put into effect, the next step will be campaign against terrorism and bringing to a halt war and bloodshed in the world.

President Rouhani said Iran and the EU can increase their mutual cooperation in political, cultural, technological and scientific areas after the implementation of the Vienna agreement.

"The agreement that was struck will be very important and influential for the future of regional relations, Europe and the world," the Iranian president said during the meeting.

The Iranian president underlined that the Iran-Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, France and Britain plus Germany) agreement will harm no country in the region or the world, and said, "Now an opportunity has been created to think less about the past and instead think of a future which can be based on mutual respect and colossal interests."

"One of the advantages of the Vienna agreement is cooperation to fulfill our shared obligation with regard to humanity and human ideals to fight terrorism and end war and shedding of the blood of innocent people," President Rouhani added.

A week after the seven nations declared striking the deal, the UN Security Council unanimously endorsed a draft resolution turning the JCPOA into international law.

Now the US Congress and the Iranian parliament have less than two months to review the deal to approve or reject its practice. The agreement should be put into action by maximum mid October, once it receives the approval of the two legislative bodies.
