Unique antique ship discovered at Black Sea bottom in Crimea

Near Sevastopol at the bottom of the Black Sea divers discovered a huge ancient ship.

The find, already called unique by scientists, was discovered by members of the deep-sea research club Rostov-dive. This discovery, presumably, has been the largest in the history of the last centuries.

The antique ship is located at a depth of 82 meters. The head of the club Rostov-dive Roman Dunaev appealed to the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the Russian Geographical Society with the request to organize a joint expedition and to ensure preservation of cultural values.

According to preliminary inspection of the ship, it was a big 125-meter long Byzantine ship, that sank for unknown reasons. Hundreds of amphorae, many of them whole, were found on board. Most likely, the ship was carrying oil and wine. Now, the military, scientists of the Russian Geographical Society, members of the club Rostov-dive, and archaeologists are preparing for deep-sea work. It is to be precisely determined, whether there is one or two ships at the bottom, the approximate year of the crash and the cause of death.

June 10, a joint expedition with the involvement of specialists of the Main Deep Water Operations Department of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Search and Accident Rescue Operations Department of the Ministry of Defense, Undersea Research Centre Russian Geographical Society starts working at the place of discovery, according to broadcasting company Zvezda. The expedition will last for several years.
