A BYRON Bay mother, who proudly and openly breastfeeds her school-age daughter, will now appear on The Disovery Channel’s Extreme Breastfeeding series.

Maha Al Musa, aged 52 and who follows a strict paleo diet, has been pictured in Woman’s Day today in a park publicly feeding her six-year-old child Aminah, who she has not immunised.

“She says to me, ‘Mummy milkie.’ I could be in the middle of doing something or talking and it’s so natural to us, we don’t make a big deal of it,” Al Musa said in the interview.

The woman’s magazine has interviewed the young girl, who describes the taste of her mother’s milk.

“Sometimes it tastes like candy canes,” she told the publication.

“It tastes like lots of different things.

“It’s my favourite thing to do when I’m not at school.

“More kids should, because it’s good for you.”

Aminah said she might stop when she is age eight but admitted that “sleeping and sucking” her mum’s breast was enjoyable.

In a post dating back to March on her personal Facebook page, Al Musa wrote: “Sitting in a cafe listening to a woman with small baby telling her hospital birth story to waitress as loud as can be- everyone could hear it - Every part of her story from being constantly interfered with from midwives and OBs (sic) was ALL about what THEY did to her and what they said to her Full (sic) story right up to stitches etc I couldn’t help myself and pulled waitress aside and said It’s (sic) important that women share their stories and remember that is one birth they are not all like that - try not to take it on. She was v (sic) touched and appreciative”

“I told her I had 3 natural births - 2 home water peaceful sacred strong birthing.”

In February she created a meme of herself breastfeeing her daughter which said: “I breastfeed my child, six and over - this is normal.”

Al Musa has a Facebook page called Maha Al Musa Spiritual Birth Advocate, which has generated just 163 likes despite her publicity in the past.

She also has a website called Bellydance Birth which advocates “prenatal belly dance moves.”

“Maha’s DVD also celebrates and shares her wonderful homebirth experience at 46 years of age,” the site said.

“Maha’s teaches in an earthy, non-judgmental, non-pretentious way.

“She shares her own journey toward motherhood through the eyes of her cultural perspective, helping pregnant and birthing women understand their strength through the art of belly dance and how it can be used as a tool toward empowered birth.”
