Where did ancient marine lizards give birth?
A new study shows that mosasaurs—large marine lizards that went extinct 65 million years ago—may have given birth in the open ocean rather than on or near coasts, Yale University announced today. The research, published online this week in Palaeontology, describes how paleontologists uncovered the youngest mosasaur specimensever found in the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. At one time thought to be ancient birds, the baby fossils were found more than 100 years ago in open ocean deposits. That implies mosasaurs did not lay their eggs on beaches or shelter their young in nurseries near the shore, contrary to previous theories, scientists say.
