60-year-old Austrian woman gives rare birth to twins conceived via in-vitro fertilization

A 60-year-old Austrian woman has given birth to twins following in-vitro fertilization treatment – a rarity due to her age, according to a report.

It is only the second time a woman 60 years or older has given birth in Austria since 1970, The Local Austria reported.

The new mom beat the odds, welcoming her babies in in a clinic in Wels-Grieskirchen, Upper Austria. She had used an egg donor from outside Austria as part of the in-vitro process, the head of the clinic Klaus Reisenberger said.

Reisenberger said it was "an interesting question, if it makes medical sense" to allow older women have in-vitro fertilization treatment.

He said in this case the pregnancy had gone well, adding that if someone had "not donated the eggs, these children would not be in the world now."
