Starved woman dies in hospital
A 55-year-old woman who had starved to within an inch of her life died in hospital on Wednesday morning, sources at Pavia's San Matteo hospital said.
Laura Carla Lodola was hospitalized on Monday weighing just over 15 kilos (33 pounds) after her live-in partner, 60-year-old Antonino Calandrini, called an ambulance.
Emergency services found Lodola unconscious, with hair grown down to her feet and her body covered in lesions. "I tried to feed her vegetable broth," Calandrini reportedly said.
"I didn't realize what was happening".
Calandrini, who worked as a custodian at a Pavia school, had taken a leave of absence in 2010 "to care for his partner who was ill," sources at the school said.
He was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of abandonment of a disabled person, kidnapping, battery and grave bodily harm.
Prosecutors may now add charges of manslaughter, sources said.
