Thousands of fish mysteriously wash up on a Queensland beach - then vanish back into the sea 24 hours later

Thousands of fish have inexplicably washed up on a beach then disappeared, leaving environmental experts baffled.

Locals who photographed the phenomenon on Buddina Beach on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland say they have never seen anything like it.

Environmental experts have been equally bewildered by the incident, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, reports Sunshine Coast Daily.

Buddina local Susan Sheard, who snapped the phenomenon while walking on the beach, said she had never experienced anything like it in ten years of living on the Coast.

'Some of them were still alive, flipping around and I threw a few back in the water. But there were too many.'

Queensland Museum's ichthyologist Jeff Johnson said the photo was 'highly unusual'.
