Eurovision 2017 winner Salvador Sobral undergoes heart transplant

Winner of Eurovision Song Contest 2017, Portugal’s Salvador Sobral, is recovering in hospital after undergoing a heart transplant. Surgeons at the Santa Cruz Hospital in Lisbon revealed the 27-year-old was ‘doing well’ after the surgery. ‘The surgery went well,’ Sobral’s surgeon Miguel Abecasis told Portugese publication Publico Daily.

‘He was very well prepared. He is a young man who understood the difficulties of this type of procedure.’ He added that Sobral would take a while to recover from the surgery, but if all went well he would be able to continue living a ‘completely normal life’.

The singer, who suffered from a longstanding heart condition, won the song contest for Portugal for the first time ever this year with his song Amar Pelis Dois (Love for Both of Us). The winning ballad was written by Sobral’s older sister Luisa, and has since launched him to infamy in Portugal. He announced in September that he was taking a break from performing as it was revealed the singer had to wait several months until a suitable donor was found.
