Elagabalus, also known as Heliogabalus, ruled Rome from 218 th to 222 th year. Historians believe that Elagabalus neglected Roman religious traditions and sexual taboos. Among his contemporaries, the young emperor had the reputation for being eccentric, lecherous and bigoted.
According to written sources, he had a terrible reputation. Edward Gibbon, for example, wrote that Elagabalus “indulged in all sorts of pleasures and often fell into an uncontrollable rage.”
When the emperor was only 15 years old, he liked to wear wigs and makeup, while pretending to be a prostitute. He even promised to doctors a lot of money if they fail to change his gender. Thus, Elagabalus can be called one of the first transgender stories.
