Nothing can stop the Force! Star Wars smashes Christmas Day box office record with a stunning $40M take

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to smash records a week into its stunning box office run.
The Disney tale set in a galaxy far, far away has raked in the biggest Christmas Day gross of all time with an estimated $40 million on Friday. according to Variety.
The much anticipated movie powered ahead of the previous record holder, Sherlock Holmes, which pulled in $24.6 million in 2009.

Now the seventh edition of the iconic space franchise is on track to take in $140 million for its second weekend in release, which will beat the record for biggest second weekend ever, the showbiz bible reported.
That record was held by Jurassic World with the $106 million that it nabbed in June.
The Force Awakens stars favourites from the original films, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and new talent including Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley.

In other box office news, Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell‘s Daddy’s Home, and Jennifer Lawrence‘s Joy are both opening strong in their first weekends.
In Daddy’s Home Will plays a loving stepfather who find he is upstaged when the fun-loving biological father, played by Mark, suddenly turns up and tries to steal his place in the children's affections.
The comedy is expected to take the No. 2 spot at the box office with around $30 million for the weekend.

The feelgood biopic about Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano earned $7 million on Christmas Day and now looks likely to top $20 million for the weekend, more than what was originally expected.
Will Smith‘s Concussion, tackling head injuries in the NFL, nabbed $5 million on December 25 and is expected to bring in around $10 million for the weekend, earning it fourth place.
But that could be challenged by the remake of Point Break, starring Édgar Ramírez, Luke Bracey and Ray Winstone. The final weekend take is estimated to be between $10 million and $15 million according to Variety.
