EU chief pledges additional € 100 million in aid to Afghanistan

On Wednesday, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen pledged to step up humanitarian aid to Afghanistan as she pledged the bloc of 27 countries to stand “alongside the Afghan people”. “We must do everything to avoid the real risk of major famine and humanitarian catastrophe,” said European Commission President von der Leyen in her annual State of the European Union address. “We will do our part, we will again increase humanitarian aid to Afghanistan by 100 million euros,” she added. Von der Leyen said the EU would present its “new, broader Afghan support package” in full in the coming weeks.
