“On the Street of Peace” - a new performance dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Sumgait massacres

An unusual performance, based on the idea of young director Nora Grigoryan, is expected on March 2 and 3 at the Russian Drama Theatre named after Konstantin Stanislavski. “On the Street of Peace” - the new performance is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Sumgait massacres. The director says that the performance “On the Street of Peace” is a documentary, but for her and for actors this format was like a test. “People on the stage are not just coming and telling stories but trying to survive what happened with them. It looks very organic on the stage. My aim wasn’t to present facts on the stage and to show everything that happened 30 years ago. The happened was terrible and you can’t show it on the stage. The bitter memories of the past are presented in our own way, one recall what happened through the music, the other through the piece of paper, another one hug a baby to remember the one, who died…” The young director confesses that she has long thought about the theme of the performance. “The idea was suddenly born. We talked with Alexander Samsonitch and Fred Davtyan about performances, Armenian plays... And then I said that we should find and stage a play about the 1915 genocide... They didn't object. But as a result of the search I found books about Sumgait and Baku massacres, then the book "Ordinary Genocide", the author and editor of which is Marina Grigoryan. It helped me very much. Later I met and talked to the author, for what I am grateful. When I was reading about Sumgait massacres, I seemed to see these terrible stories and pass through them. I realized that before that I didn’t know anything ... At first I thought that this theme should be staged with students of Yerevan State Institute of Theater and Cinematography (Russian Department). The young people know very little about Sumgait but I changed my mind. I must admit that I have never heard of the Sumgait massacres from the stage. I suggested it to stage in the theater, my suggestion was very well received, and I started to work. By the way, the presentation is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, for which special thanks to Armen Amiryan”. The play about Sumgait massacres was born as follows: I collected the play. Marina Marinosyan, the head of theater’s literature part, helped me to edit the play. Certainly, I could not construct dramaturgy dialogs myself, but I've collected all monologues myself. The name of presentation has two meanings. It has its explanation: all rallies and murders have taken place on the street called Peace... So we decided to name it similarly”. The young director is convinced that she will not disappoint the audience. “I don’t understand the people who preach the war, especially when the theater doesn’t love it. Theater is the only place where there is no war... For that reason, maybe many will not like it but I didn’t hide that there were Azerbaijanis who helped Armenians. And that doesn’t mean that we should forget everything and forgive them. I wish Azerbaijan to repent and apologize. I repeat once again this is my wish”.
