Putin Gets in a Few Words With Trump But Still No Formal Meeting

Vladimir Putin finally got some face time with Donald Trump.
It wasn’t much - just a few minutes of chatting on the walk to the group photo at an Asia-Pacific leaders summit Saturday morning in Vietnam - but the two men did talk. They just didn’t formally meet, as the U.S. president continued to deny his Russian counterpart a full-blown sit-down.
It would have been hard to avoid each other entirely amid the hobnobbing at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, and they’d already shaken hands twice, at an earlier group photo Friday night and as the APEC meetings commenced Saturday morning.
But Kremlin officials had expected the two men to hold a formal meeting at the gathering in Danang, and were confused when it didn’t come off.
The last time Putin and Trump met, in July at the G-20 summit, Trump couldn’t seem to get enough of the Russian president.
They met behind closed doors for more than two hours, without an official note-taker. It yielded a limited Syrian cease-fire. Trump also spent unscheduled time with him at a dinner hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. There was also another brief meeting.
