Although it is summer in Argentina heavy storms and treacherous weather conditions have seriously affected the area since the New Year and the river's banks could take no more and burst this week.

The river burst and the animals in the fields were suddenly swept away by the flash flood.

Residents who managed to get away in the nick of time and climbed onto a nearby balcony filmed the shocking images as the cows tried to swim against the strong current.

People recording the scenes are heard saying in the background: 'Oh my God, look at them.'

The river runs into the Laguna Grande lake, just east of the city of Rosario.

Gustavo Bordet, the governor of Entre Rios province, said many of the rural roads in the area had been totally destroyed by the floods.

He said: 'These roads cannot be walked on. We hope the storm passes soon and the weather improves in order to start the reconstruction of the area.'

It is unclear if any cows survived the flood.

Argentina is one of the world's biggest exporters of beef.
