The Iraqi army drove the militants out of the ancient city of Nimrud

On Tuesday, October 18, the regular army of Iraq has taken control of the ruins of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud (Kalhu) in the North, to the South-East of Mosul, according to the Agency Rudaw.

Shortly before the Islamists, using sledgehammers and jackhammers have destroyed priceless ancient statues in Mosul Museum. Was destroyed the statues of the guardians-guardians of the gate of Nergal. At the same time, the militants defeated the public library of Mosul, destroying thousands of rare books. About 8 thousand of old manuscripts and rare books (mainly of the XVIII-XIX centuries), were savagely burned. Many of the destroyed manuscripts was included in the list of valuable books, published by UNESCO.
