Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year is ‘Youthquake’

“Youthquake” has been chosen as the Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year for 2017, it was announced on the dictionary’s website Friday.

The word, which means a “significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people,” gained in popularity during June’s snap election in the United Kingdom in which Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party managed to engage large numbers of young people.

“Selecting one word each year that embodies the previous 12 months is a difficult task, which is one reason we surround it with a diverse shortlist of friends,” Casper Grathwohl, the president of dictionaries and member of the jury that made the decision, said in a statement. “We try to choose a word that reminds us about where we’ve just been, but also one that captures the zeitgeist, that defining spirit or mood of the moment.”

Among the names on the shortlist were also Antifa and Kompromat, which Grathwohl described as terms which have “strong usage evidence and are worthy call-outs, but choosing any one of them as word of the year didn’t feel right.”

Also shortlisted were Broflake, Gorpcore, Milkshake Duck, Newsjacking, Unicorn and White Fragility.

Last year’s word of the year was post-truth, with emoji chosen in 2015.
