US House of Representatives formally condemns Erdogan bodyguards’ attack on protesters

With a vote of 397, the US House of Representatives on Tuesday formally condemned the actions by the bodyguards of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who is one of the lawmakers that has spearheaded the respective House Resolution 354, stated that those visiting the US shall respect the rights of its citizens.

H.Res. 354 condemns the Turkish security members during the incident that occurred at the time of Erdogan’s visit to Washington D.C., as they had attacked the peaceful demonstrators who were protesting against the Turkish president, reported Voice of America Armenian Service.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), who is another lawmaker behind this resolution, noted that the congressional passage of this resolution was indispensable, since it brings clarity to the US position with respect to what had occurred.

DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton recalled that the actions by Erdogan’s bodyguards were an attack not solely on the demonstrators, but on freedom of speech and the right to express protest.

Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes noted that the videos of this incident give reason to believe that President Erdogan himself had sanctioned and monitored the attack.

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) welcomed the passing of this resolution. ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian, who was videotaping live at the scene of the May 16 attack which took place in front of the Turkish ambassador’s residence, stated that Recep Tayyip Erdogan was attempting to export his intolerance and violence to the US, but this attempt had failed.
