German finance ministry Bomb Scare: Explosives sent to offices of Merkel's right-hand man

he package was addressed to Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble.

Security services in the ministry's post office spotted the potentially fatal package as it went through an X-ray machine, German newspaper Bild said.

The scan showed wires protruding from the package, it added.German police confirmed the "suspicious package" contained explosives.

Police tweeted the package was found at 9.30am today and some employees had to be evacuated from the building.

Experts said after an initial investigation the package contained so-called explosives mixture which is frequently used to produce pyrotechnics.A statement said it was designed to cause "considerable injuries when the package was opened".

Berlin Police, said: "A suspicious package was delivered to the German Finance Ministry at about 9.30am today.

"According to our detectives a risk cannot be ruled out.

"Some finance ministry employees had to leave their rooms.

"The package was x-rayed and backed up."

The package was then taken to away from the site to the LKA building - the State Criminal Police building - for further investigation by explosives experts.
